At the beginning of the conference on 29th October a number of apologies were given, one of which was Maria Miller MP (Minister for Disabled People).

She sent a quite lengthy response that said very little to decline her invitation and a number of points she raised provided much amusement to the people who attended the conference.

She started by saying that “the Government is fully committed to enabling disabled people to have the same opportunities and choices as non-disabled people”. As you can imagine that caused a stir in the room straightaway.

She then went on to say “over the past year I have made it a personal priority to regularly meet with disabled people, their families and the organisations that represent them.” She spoke about organisations that “are already working closely with the government to help shape welfare reforms”.

  1. What a load of old tosh. What they keep overlooking is that the MAJORITY of disabled people are to unwell or unable to work. Be honest about it, they want to cut the benefit bill and they think that pushing people into ‘work’ (even though there is very little available), then all of their problems will be solved. However, successive governments have tried to cut down on the number of people on disability benefits and each time people have won their right to have them, because they are not fit to work. This is like a time bomb…as more people are forced into fighting for their right to welfare, which is an upsetting, gargantuan task and humiliating, then we should all work together to let the powers that be, the press and the public know what is going on. From the flawed forms and health assessments, to the struggle each of us face with these unjust changes.

  2. Hmm… If the letter is so deranged, deluded and – how can I put this? – lying, as the two quotes, I’ll probably pass.

Still, you have to hand it to Miller, she really earns her money, doing exactly what she’s paid for – screwing the sick and disabled.

  3. Hi there,

The link to the letter seems to be taking me through to the WordPress page coding, rather than the letter…
