Letter and model motion to unions for support
Dear Branch Secretary
Disabled people celebrate 20th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of Disabled People (CRPD)
This December marks the Twentieth Anniversary of the UN CRPD. This is a unique Convention as it is the only UN Human Rights Treaty that has been written by the subjects – Disabled people. To mark this historic event the Disabled people’s rights movement is organising a celebration, protest and rally in Manchester on Friday 4th December to also coincide with International Day of Disabled People (3rd December).
We are holding a protest and rally to highlight the continuing attacks by UK Government’s over the last 16 years on our rights, living standards, social security, employment, social care, access to inclusive education and inclusion in society as equal citizens. Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) reported the Tory Government to the UN and they investigated and agreed that there had been ‘grave and systematic’ violations of our rights.
We were hopeful that the election of a Labour Government in 2024 would end this sorry situation, but sadly we have been and continue to be in a battle to defend our basic rights with the Starmer and now the Burnham regime.
With support from many MPs and allies in the unions we were able to defeat the cut to Personal Independent Payments (PIP). However, the Timms review looks set to go back on its promises not to cut PIP. The widely publicised proposals to remove the universal credit (UC) health element for disabled people under 25 comes on top of the cuts to UC made last year which has created a two-tier system based on age. It costs the same to buy a wheelchair, specialist equipment, use transport or social care if you are 20 or 55. None of this makes sense but we need your support to highlight and reverse this situation.
Our appeal for funds is to cover the costs for organising the celebration of the Convention and the protest and rally in Manchester. We appreciate your solidarity and support.
