After a year of very hard work and wonderful encouragement from all of our friends and supporters Pat’s Petition  closed with over 62,600 signatures. We then sent an open letter to Liam Byrne.

We are delighted to announce that all the effort succeeded

and we have a result.

Liam Byrne has been in touch and the Labour Party are giving us an Opposition Day Debate in the Commons based around Pat’s Petition. This means the debate will take place in the Chamber at the House of Commons with Ministers and front benchers as well as back benchers.

So fantastic news – Pat’s Petition is moving to Pat’s Debate. Tell everyone – shout, sing, tweet using hashtag #PatsDebate. Let’s shake this government into listening to us at last.

The debate will probably take place some time in January and we will only have a weeks notice so the important thing now is to get ready for the debate and make sure all the issues we have been campaigning on get attention.

The theme of the motion for the debate will be the Pat’s Petition demand that the government – Stop and review the cuts to benefits and services which are falling disproportionately on disabled people, their carers and families and a demand for a Cumulative Impact Assessment. It’s a very wide brief so if you want to focus on a particular issue that’s fine.

We will need lots of help from you all to make sure that after all your effort this debate gets real results.

We are hoping that many of you will put up blog posts in support of Pat’s Debate and that we can collect the links together here.

We will also need your help to ask MPs from all Parties to speak in this debate and if we can direct them to your blog posts it will show them the kind of messages we want to put across.

Contact your MP details via this link

Watch this space to see how the plans for the debate are progressing.

Time is running out.

Please get behind this debate and make it a game changer.

Pat x

  1. Thanks for pointing that out Joe, I wondered where the idea that rich people would be better off tax wise came from. That is disgusting that the rich will get richer and the poor disabled poorer in April next year.
The Independent today reports Google managers delight at avoiding tax and say they were offered incentives to do so.

It makes my blood boil, but I guess that’s capitalism.

Hopefully it’ll make newspapers some good copy in April.

  2. Fantastic Pat! We are so lucky to have you and the rest of the team speak up for us. I am furious that this governent think it ok to overlook big businesses & rich people not paying tax, (like Sir Phillip Green, Amazon et al) and come after disabled people for their poor income.

It might be true that very rich people do have to pay more out of their income since the recent mini budget but as a proportion of their income it will be small in proportion with the amount we will be expected to loose from an already frugal sum.

    • Spabbygirl, for info, because of the decision in the March Budget of this year to reduce 50% rate of tax to 45%, as of 6th April 2013 for those whose taxable income is more than £150,000, the net result is that they will actually be better off as of April 6th 2013. George Osborne, in his ‘mini budget’ presented it as if the very rich would be paying more out of their income – Not true.
Well done, Pat and their team for another remarkable achievement..

  3. Has Ed Milliband made or contemplating an apology to Our Dead, their Bereaved , and the Surviving for being the Architects of our “Torment of Hell” ? i will be a long time Dead.

  4. Perhaps they think because we are disabled we won’t make a fuss. Well maybe some of us can’t walk, but we can shout. DON’T TAKE IT OUT ON US. Life is hard enough…

  5. http://t.co/PevB2zg8 With the greatest respect to all who have signed Pats Petition, [ Myself included ]have you forgotten who are the architects who created the monster that has befallen us and carried on by this Nazty Coalition, has Liam Byrne and Labour had a “Road to Damascus” conversion in “opposition ? Has Labour said they will tear up the Atos and the rest of theRogues contracts and end these vile assessments etc etc NO. ukuncut has made huge inroads on tax-dodgers and winning over the public, not with help from Political Parties but People Power, they day i rely on or vote for self-serving scoundrels is the day i will bury myself in shame. If there is a lesson for anyone Politicians of any Hue will say anything in opposition, its what they do in power, and i for one am no Goldfish.

  6. An outstanding achievement.

    Many congratulations.

    Mo xx
