Apologies for the late notice, but there is a protest at Kings Cross on Monday 9th at 6pm to campaign for safer streets; and against pedestrian crossing removals.
https://www.transportforall.org.uk/news/pedestrian-crossings-under-threat
As many of you will be aware, the Mayor has been implementing a programme of removing pedestrian crossings and shortening the pedestrian phase on traffic lights. For disabled and older people, especially blind and VI people, this is an utter disaster.
Assembly Member Jenny Jones will be there, as will many cyclists who also feel strongly about opposing attempts to prioritise impatient motorists over other road users. Transport for All will be there to highlight that disabled and older people are disproportionately affected by removing crossings.
Please spread the word; join us if you can; and if not, write to your London Assembly Member to say that crossings must be protected.
This action is being organised by the cycling community but I hope soon to be launching a joint statement and a campaign about crossings explicitly from the disability movement – with another action, hopefully!
All the best

on the topic of boris johnson, i refer to;
As happens with every government welfare report, mysteriously, somehow, details leaked out to the media yesterday and so the coverage has already started. It turns out that Boris Johnson’s submission to the DLA reform consultation which closed in February 2011 was the smoking gun we needed and the government hoped no-one would ever find. The Mayor’s submission stood out from the other consultation responses, not because it was supportive of our claims (almost all the submissions were) but because it was incredibly thoughtful, well written and researched. Some people are concerned that this may be to do with forthcoming mayoral elections. Whilst we understand the concern, we do not believe that is the case as the Mayor’s submission was completed in February 2011 along with all the other submissions. It would be very helpful if we could all let Boris Johnson know how much we appreciate his carefully considered and supportive statement over the weekend.
I seem to remember Boris wanted a ‘shared streets’ programme. Pedestrians and cars don’t mix. How would blind, elderly or severely disabled people fare? Answer – they wouldn’t!
