Some claimants have received a letter from DWP, similar to the one below, informing them that DWP has now begun reviewing PIP awards after suspending them because of the Covid 19 outbreak, and that their PIP awards have now been extended until 2022. A likely explanation is the backlog created by the suspension of PIP reviews. At this point, there is no information about ESA or UC claimants found having Limited Capability for Work, or Limited Capability for Work Related Activity, in terms of their claim’s review. Because it is impossible to find somebody Fit for Work without a face to face assessment, all ESA/UC claimants who did not meet the WCA descriptors determining their benefit entitlement (LCW or LCWRA) following a telephone assessment will need eventually to have a face to face assessment, so it is also likely that a backlog has already built up. We would like to know of any claimants who received a letter from DWP informing them of an extension of their (PIP or ESA/UC) claims, and of the duration of the extension.

  1. My pip was extended to July 2021 but had a phone call in February to say I had a phone assesment then after I had it said it would take 6/8 weeks but it took 4 weeks got a letter yesterday to say I got no points don’t under stand it did not even ask questions on form phone call lasted 20 minutes

  2. I had one of the extension letters a short while ago, my original award was until April 2021 and they extended it by 9 months to January 2022. However, yesterday I received an award assessment form to complete and return within the next 3 weeks (15th March). Really confused and stressed and haven’t even been given full 4 weeks to complete it.

    • Hi I received a letter the same as this saying that it had been extended to April 2022 and yesterday I received a review form am confused don’t know what to do

  3. Yes I had a letter in January saying extended til jan 2023 but had a phonecall of them yesterday which I missed now I’m worried that they’re reviewing my claim again . They say they will ring back if need be .

  4. I received this letter the 20th October 2020, I’ve now received another letter stating my review is commencing now and I need to return the forms by the 24th February. I’ve seeked guidance through citizens advice and they contacted them and was told I’ll basically have 2 reviews now

  5. I never received any letter regarding my PIP which ran out on jan 21st this year. I have just had to make a ‘new claim’ even though my circumstances are worse, rather than better/the same. No notification of my original PIP award being extended. Does anyone know if the payment will continue until the new claim has been assessed or will all PIP payments stop until such time as the new claim has been looked at thoroughly?

    Many thanks.

    • You wont get any payment but I believe your PIP should have been extended, I have just had to go to MP with same problem. You should make a formal complaint too the DWP re no notification, no forms being sent out for renewal six months in advance, no letter re stopping benefit they should give you compensation may only be £50 but better than nothing.
7th December Minister for Disabled People Justin Tomlinson has confirmed that all claimants who are to have their personal independence payment (PIP) award automatically extended – under the coronavirus (COVID-19) related easement that was introduced in March 2020 – will receive notice of the extension by ‘early 2021’.
Responding yesterday to a written question in parliament on the number of claimants who have not been notified of automatic extensions of their PIP awards due to COVID-19 where those awards were first made by the First-tier Tribunal, Mr Tomlinson said –
‘The Department has been automatically applying extension of awards of PIP for all decisions in scope of the COVID-19 easements including those decisions first instated at First-tier Tribunals. All customers receiving an extension will be notified of their new award end date early 2021, the planned completion date for all extension activity.’

On the 14th January 2021 he DWP publicly responded to a request, asking them about the award period for claimants.
“In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, we have taken action to ensure awards due for review do not end prior to a review being carried out.
Clearly they have not so MP would be best to take this up don’t let em get away with it and do nothing.

  6. I got a letter today saying that my PIP which was awarded until November 2023 has been extended to August 2024

  7. I dont think they have been assessing people properly and have had a supreme court ruling made against them and people could be due back payments upto 13,000

  8. my pip is supposed to end april 2021 i got mine thru a tribunal will that effect my extention or are they still extendeit

    • Hi Lisa,

My PIP was also awarded through the tribunal on 2018 and the end date was originally 14th June 2020 but they extended mine for 6 months due to the restrictions around assessments but refused to further extend it when my award was nearing the end of the extended period of 14th December 2020 and stating “an extension could not be applied because my award was decided by a tribunal and not the DWP”. Now because I have been waiting for a telephone assessment since 27th October 2020. Needless to say that my end date came and went and after having chased and chased for weeks, finally received an appointment for 20th January 2021 (a total of 12 weeks since the Independent assessment services received my claim).

Phone in hand, the withheld number flashed up on my screen for a matter of seconds before it cut off completely, didn’t even have a chance to press the green accept button. HCP reported that I failed to attend the assessment after not being able to get hold of me on that or the other two times they attempted to call me!! lies, lies, lies, it has now been 16 weeks waiting for an assessment, and two long months without my much needed PIP award because of their fraudulent behaviour.

Don’t trust them, they are all target orientated and should be prosecuted for their disgusting crimes against vulnerable disabled people.

      • This is lies please challenge them and make a formal complaint they are trying this one on everyone i think

You should be being paid got to your MP also, always do everything by post not by phone for evidence.tehy try to make people do the phone but you don’t have to

    • No it won’t you are entitled to an extension the DWP will try and tell you that you can’t because it is a tribunal but that is not fact they are full of lies. so quote and get your MP involved and make a formal complaint, these complaint sneed to be logged if it happens, Mr Tomlinson said –

  9. 23rd december told i was having mandatory esa reassesment over the phone. got the form yesterday, review booked for wednesday. I have had multiple disabilities since severe multiple brain injury from road traffic accident. am unable to communicate successfully on phone and my support worker sent a letter regarding the severity of my permanent brain injury. Obviously getting new proof is problematic and i feel that any information they gather will be skewed by covid, i lip read so masks not helpful etc. will they have to re do these exams post covid ??

    • you can do everything by mail you do not have to do it by phone , better evidence wise too ask for a reasonable adjustment under the equality act if any problems with them

  10. I have received a PIP extension letter today (18/1/21) My award end date was June 2022, now extended to March 2023.

  11. Had letter saying pip has been extended until Jan 16 2023 should be April 2021 review also my ESA support group claim should of been Feb 2020 heard nothing date now jan 16 2021 but I get state pension July 2021

  12. Mine been extended to November 2022

  13. Mine has been suspended until Nov 2021, which means paying £10 for 11 months of Blue Badge 🙁

  14. I received three identical letters this year from DWP in April, Sept & Oct regarding my ESA saying “ We have looked at your claim again following a recent change.” I was overdue a reassessment because I knew my support group award was review after two years from May 2018. After the Oct letter I finally phoned up to ask them why I’d received three of the same letter, they couldn’t really answer that, maybe a system update had churned them out, but importantly I asked what the “change” was and had my award been looked at without an ESA50? The lady checked my records and it said review after 5th April 2022, so I can only assume they had done a paper based review at their end and extended my award for a further two years, which is great. My frustration is you only know this if you ask them specifically about your award. With PIP you get a length of award but ESA they never tell you how long your award is for unless you ask them, it is never written on your award paperwork, why not? I believe support group awards are only two or three years maximum before reassessment is needed. Anyway at least I know it should be after April 5th 2022 before I’ll get an ESA50…in theory.
So my advice is if your wondering about your ESA award and that your overdue a reassessment, ring them up, like me they may have done a paper based review internally and extended your award…but you won’t know if you don’t ring them.

  15. My advice to anyone on here on ESA in the Support Group and they are due reassessment due to it being 2 or 3 years since their ESA50, ring up the DWP and ask them if their current award has been reviewed paper based without needing an ESA50, they can tell you. I was due a reassessment from June 2020. At the end of October after receiving two identical letters, bar the date, in September and again in October regards my ESA saying “we have looked at your claim again following a recent change” I phoned up the DWP as a didn’t understand what “change” had occurred and asked had my ESA been looked at again, the lady looked on the system and told me it says review award after 5th April 2022, so they must have done a paper based assessment without the need for an ESA50.

What frustrates me is they don’t tell you this unless you ask them, unlike with PIP awards which have a length of award, the DWP never tell you how long you are in the Support Group for unless you specifically ask them, I only knew my award in 2018 was review after 2 years because I asked the question, you never get it on your award letter, why can’t they tell you?

  16. I had a letter arrive yesterday (18/11) to say my PIP was extended until November 2022

  17. I had a letter on Sept 24th to say my award had been extended until October 2021, then yesterday I received a new claim form dated November 7th, which I have a month to fill in, but has to be returned by December 7th! All this makes no sense, just added extra worry and stress which I can’t cope with at the moment.

  18. Iv had 1 of these letter extending to mine to Nov 2022

  19. Received letter stating PIP extended to April 2022. Was due to end July 2021. Haven’t heard anything about my Support Group ESA as yet.

  20. I haven’t heard a thing about my ESA even though it was due for review sometime between May and September. I don’t get any payments as my work pension is a tiny bit over the threshold but rely on it for NI Credits as I was put in the Support group.
I’m already missing 6 years NI because my ex husband claimed Income Support for both of us on top of his Carers Allowance so I couldn’t claim IB or ESA despite being unable to work and on an indefinite award of DLA at the time. Neither the DWP or HMRC could explain why even though I had an underlying entitlement to those benefits even though I wasn’t claiming that I wasn’t entitled to NI credits either. Doesn’t that descriminate against the disabled partner when they assume the man is the head of the household for benefits purposes?

  21. Extended until June 22.

    • Got a letter saying pip extended to June then had another one 10 days later saying it was being reviewed since then have had phone review and then a text saying dwp received assessors report and will have outcome within 8 weeks.so now dreading the brown envelope which has made my mental state sky rocket…

      • Exact same as me I’m even called Jamie with mental illness but found out before brown envelope came because payment wasn’t made so rang up told review was unsuccessful and I’d scored 0 points both elements so mandatory reconsideration made got call off decision maker told em what I thought then had another brown envelope was successful but lost only £30 a month so accepted iust when you get call tell them wat your expectations were and why as fully as you can tell them how devastating losing it would be and good luck..

  22. Yes mine got extended to October 2022, due to covid19 restrictions

    • Had a letter august 2020 saying they’re going to still pay me up to january 2021
but i should of had an assessment july 2020
it’s now coming to end of december and a bit worried because i haven’t received any other letter telling me if there gonna do phone assessments so i’ve seen other people have it or extend it longer due to covid
also esa hasn’t said anything either so confusing ?

  23. my pip extended to june 2022

  24. I was sent a letter extending my PIP,,a few weeks later I got a letter saying I have to send in a review form,,I filled it in with all info,,docs letters etc,,2 weeks ago I got another letter saying extended until June 2021,,I’ll have to get all the info again

    • Do u have to
I thought that once u sent ur review form that u will get review at sometime
      Hopefully this is correct
Hopefully someone will come along and explain

  25. extended through to June 2022

  26. My PIP award has been extended until March 2022

  27. Hi
I was initially sent an email saying my PIP was to be extended to march 2021. Then l received my assesment form and filled it in. Next l had a telephone assesment because of covid. Floowed by a letter saying my awarad has been extended until june 2021 followed by a letter and text saying they have all the information to reassess me. So l have no idea what is going on now.

    • Same here
And when u phone they just say it has been extended
      And review is the system
Worried all the time ain’t fair

  28. My PIP extended until 29th April 2022

  29. My PIP has been extended until May 2022

  30. Last week I received a letter saying my assessment has been deferred to September 2020. No other information was enclosed. Glad to have a reprieve as last time I had to face a court ‘tribunal aka trial’ twice in 5 weeks, for PIP & ESA. Sanctions meant I went from size 14 to 8 in during those 9 months of sheer terror. I have a rare disease, these ‘assessors’ are woefully inadequate; it has taken me 50 years to get my diagnosis. Try telling these people about this condition when Doctors have overlooked/ignored me since I was 7yrs old. Futile.

    • I know how you feel. I had to attend my ‘Tribunal’ twice because, after getting me to go to the tribunal place, they made me wait 40 minutes before calling me through, asking to see if I had brought all my paperwork through and then telling me, sorry, we have not received anything yet from the GP/Hospitals, etc so are postponing the appeal. I felt incredibly anxious as it was and thought, ‘why could they not have just telephoned me to tell me it was postponed’? After the initial medical assessment, was told, NO, do not qualify for PIP. Had the Mandatory Reconsideration…. again, NO. Finally had my appeal and was told, Yes, you do qualify. All in all it took some 56 weeks from start to finish. Now my PIP came to an end on Jan 21st this year. No letter about renewal, or about any extension. I had to call and make a fresh claim even though now, my condition has worsened considerably. The lady on the telephone said to me today, ‘you don’t seem to have any problem with communicating to people at all as you are speaking to me quite well’……Hello, it is via telephone and, if I do not answer your questions, I do not qualify! The fact that all my medical notes were there, and that it was clear my condition has deteriorated considerably since the first award did not seem to hold sway with her. She seemed to be of the impression I am ‘fine’……. Now I have to wait up to 12 weeks for a new decision (which will, no doubt be a no), before another 8 – 12 week wait for mandatory reconsideration, followed by yet another appeal. My health is not good already and this added stress is causing it to tumble fast. Does anyone know if they continue to pay PIP until my new claim is assessed (following on from the original award)?

  31. My PIP has been extended until May 2021. It was due for reassessment in March.

  32. I’ve just received a letter on Saturday 15 Th November from my city council, stating that they’ve been “informed of a change to your DWP benefit”. Then the usual, “your housing benefit may be suspended, blah, blah”. I have not received anything from DWP & my usual payment went in on Friday 13 Th. I have complained numerous times to this council (who are appalling generally & boast about what they do) about the wording & timing of these letters, but nothing is done. Also, sending it second class, so you receive it on a Saturday, when they’re shut! On their website, they don’t give e-mail addresses, there’s a form to complete, which often kicks you out. Towards the end of the letter it always implies that you haven’t notified them of a change. On the website they ask people to try not to phone, due to Covid19, maybe if they did things in a better way, wouldn’t happen. I tend to be reassessed/get the dreaded ESA50 every 2 years, around November, so is it that, who knows?

Last time I got one, council were informed I got PIP, but this made no difference to my housing benefit & the assistant I spoke to admitted it was odd they knew I’d got PIP for first time, before I knew!

So I’m having a stressful weekend worrying about it.

  33. If you get award extended
U still can get a review that’s what happened to me was awarded till April next year then out of the blue review form
Very confused about it still wait 3 months since form sent back being told at Dwp u ward extended can’t give updates on my review gorm

  34. Review September 8th sent back form
Pip twice extended till July 21
Don’t know will the review go ahead

  35. Someone I know has received a letter extending their PIP to September 2022. They had a review due in January 2021. I have not received one of these letters.

  36. PIP was due to end 21/07/21.

I was intending to request a paper based review in January 2021 without face to assessment. Had my Health Professionals ready to support review.

September 2020 received letter PIP award extended to 21/03/22.

Will still need to reapply for ESA in September/October 2021.

I had to reapply on ESA50 form dated for the day all WCA face to face assessment were suspended due to COVID-19 lockdown. Sent completed form and was placed in Support Group until November 2021 assessed as paper based.

Hope the information helps to build a picture.

  37. I’ve not been well enough to cope with the form-filling, so my PIP has been suspended. I just can’t keep on top of everything.

  38. My support group ESA should have been due for review at the end of July, based on what I was told when I rang to find out how long I’d been awarded it for over 3 years ago. I am still getting paid, have had no communication from them. I am assuming (with fingers crossed) that they are just leaving me alone and letting it run as I reach state pension age next summer. It’d be nice if they let me know though, I am somewhat anxious all the time, concerned that I could get the dreaded form through the post any day. I don’t appreciate a year of anxiety.

  39. Yes i’ve had my PIP award extended until Feb 2022.

It was due to be reassessed on 23rd of this month, was first extended until May 2021 and now 2022.

    original award was via tribunal.

    • I had phone assessment on 9th Nov, I got a letter saying they have all evidence now on 24th nov &I’m waiting for a discision & I’m also (cev) to covid 19 & I’ve got to shield , I’m worrying like mad
