Supermarket giant Tesco must know no shame. As unemployment blights the
lives of millions, Britain’s biggest private sector employer is taking on
staff — for free.
This is part of the scandal of “workfare” — making people work unpaid or
face being thrown off benefits.
Tesco reports that over the past four months some 1,400 people have worked
for them without pay. Only 300 got a job with the company.
The Tory government is slashing jobs and then punishing the jobless. And
to add insult to injury, they are forcing people to work for free to boost
profits for big business.
That’s why this Saturday we will be demanding that workfare be scrapped
immediately.

When the pot is empty then what
Thank you for highlighting this and for some geruones and constructive comments. Tesco generate major employment opportunites and tax income, that’s a given. But we also need to expect more from them than this.Like yourself, I manage a project that tailors projects to help homeless people into work, many of whom are entirely prepared to work if for free’ if there’s a potential for a job at the end of it. The problem with Workfare, is that this possibility is often entirely open-ended. As a result, not only does the individual put themselves at risk of putting a whole lot of effort for a whole lot of nothing, it also amounts to a public subsidy for a multinational corporation that generated a32.65bn last year, and others like them. Tesco, prove you can do better.
Same old Tories, but making the disabled work for free is disgusting! Scrap this flawed workfare (slave labour) scheme now. Shame on Cameron, and I cannot wait until the next general election to vote UKIP.
